현재 총장은 John L. Anderson로, 2007년 10월 30일에 8대 총장으로 임명되었습니다.
1890년Frank Gunsaulus목사는 “자신에게 백만불만 있으면, 다가오는 변화의 산업시대에 중요한 역할을 할 수 있는 학생들을 양육해 내는 학교를 짓겠다”는 설교를 통해 자신의 학교 설립 비전을 선포했고, 그 설교를 듣고 있던Philip Danforth Armour(the Chicago meat packer and grain merchant)는 Gunsaulus 목사의 비전에 협력하여 1893년 “Armour Institute”를 설립하게 되고, 1940년에 Lewis Institute와, 1949년 The Institute of Design이 병합되면서 현재의 Illinois Institute of Technology가 되었습니다.
