A symposium examining the place of religion in public life today: have we mistakenly pushed it out of public culture? Can or should religion play a civilized part in political and social discourse? Is religion helpful or harmful in the educational context?

Moderated by Anne Benvenuti, Professor of Philosophy and Psychology at Cerro Coso College, and Visiting Scholar in the Divinity School

Liza Cerroni-Long is Professor of Anthropology at Eastern Michigan University, and UNESCO Consultant on Cultural Pluralism. Abbas Chinoy is a graduate student in the Divinity School, and former spiritual care provider at the University of Chicago Hospital. Chris Dorsey is Vice President of Development at Chicago Theological Seminary. Michael Hogue is Associate Professor of Theology at Meadville-Lombard Theological School. Kenneth Seeskin is Professor of Philosophy at Northwestern University.

The Hyde Park Kenwood Interfaith Council's monthly interfaith dialogue will take place Sunday, May 2nd, from 5-6:30pm at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints Hyde Park Ward, 5200 S. University. The topic is: "What have been the most significant changes in your denomination/ larger faith tradition over recent decades?"
Conversation starters will be: Aliya Bagewadi-Interfaith Dialogue & the Muslim Student Association at University of Chicago, Joe Cannon-Bishop of the Hyde Park LDS Ward, and Pat White-Coordinator of Ministries at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church.
All are welcome to attend and participate.

Jane Goodall Lecture: Gombe and Beyond: The Next 50 years

World-renowned primatologist, conservationist, and U.N. Messenger of Peace, Dr. Jane Goodall will reflect on the meaning of her work over the past five decades, the extraordinary changes the world has seen since she began her work in 1960, and the impact these changes have had on people, animals and the environment. In addition, she will discuss the role we must all play over the next 50 years to ensure a better future for generations to come.
